Making the Best Out of Every Situation

Windy making the best out of every situationAn important lesson that kids can learn early on in life is that things are not always going to go as they have hoped or planned. There are so many things that come about in which we have no control over, so teaching kids how to be flexible and go with the flow, can be very valuable to them.

One of the things that can attribute to setting one up for disappointment, is having high expectations. While having high expectations can be beneficial in many areas of life, it’s always good to make sure that expectations are realistic. This is just a great discussion to have with kids so that they can learn that making the best out of every situation will ultimately make them happy!

Avoid Eating Too Much Halloween Candy

Windy Avoid Eating too much Halloween CandyThe end of the month has quickly arrived and Halloween is just two days away! We have been talking about it all month long, so it’s hard to believe it’s finally here! We know the kids are excited and yes, dressing up, walking around with friends and family, and getting candy is tons of fun! There’s just one little thing we want to mention and that is to make sure the kids avoid eating too much Halloween candy!

The OrganWise Guys encourage kids to select a couple pieces of Halloween candy, eat and enjoy and then hand over to their parents to manage. Parents can then oversee the candy intake! If it helps, make sure the kids are well-fed before going out for the night and try preparing a healthy treat, like these candy apple cookies for post trick or treating to distract from the candy overload!

Make sure and download the coloring and activity sheet and use as a pre-trick or treating time filler:Click-Coloring-Sheet

Video: Celebrate Healthy Lung Month

healthy lung month

October is Healthy Lung Month and nobody is more excited about this than Windy, the Lungs. We, along with our friends over at the Mesothelioma and Asbestos Awareness Center, are offering up some helpful tips for healthy lungs and to help prevent toxins from affecting your health:

  • Get plenty of exercise, which is good for your lungs AND the rest of your body, too. (Think of it like “working out” for your lungs.)
  • Do not smoke! It’s dangerous to your lungs, entire body and everyone around you.
  • Switch up your cleaning supplies to more natural ones. Some of them contain harmful chemicals that pollute the air you breathe.
  • To diminish some of the toxins in the air, use an air purifier.
  • Before doing any major home renovations, be sure to have your house checked for dangerous fibers, such as asbestos. They can be found in walls, ceilings, or insulation. If the fibers break apart they can be easily inhaled which can later cause serious lung illnesses or cancer like mesothelioma

Teach Kids Why Rest is Important

Windy restWe, as adults, are all guilty of overextending ourselves. Whether it be school events, extra-curricular activities, or even fun, social events, we tend to schedule our lives to the point of exhaustion! While being busy to an extent is good, there is that fine line of it becoming both emotionally and physically unhealthy. Rest becomes such an important component of good health and sometimes we forget that. We like to burn the candle at both ends as they say, which can definitely wear down the body, resulting in potential sickness.

As we head into Fall, and flu season approaches, it’s a good idea to remind kids the importance of getting plenty of rest. Get to bed at a decent hour and, as Windy, the lungs talks about, sneak in an extra nap over the weekend if your body is feeling tired. Kids will be able to work and play harder when feeling well-rested!

Make sure and download the rest-inspired coloring sheet for the kiddos! They may want to take a little snooze after seeing it:

Keep Kids Active and Hydrated

Keep Kids Active and HydratedBack to school time doesn’t have to mean that physical activity and outdoor play has to come to an end. While we may be busier with school, homework and extra-curricular activities, it’s still so important to make sure kids are staying active. It’s easy to get home and let the kids watch TV or grab an Iphone to watch, but physical activity is the best answer for good health, as well as help the kids sleep better at night!

The temperatures outside remain hot and so, in addition to getting outdoors to play, the other reminder is to make sure kids are taking water breaks to rehydrate. It’s easy for kids to get caught up playing and having fun with friends, however, a regular water break will ensure that kids are getting in enough water to stay hydrated. So for back to school time, make sure to keep kids active and hydrated!
