Olympic Dreams in Your Own Back Yard

If your children are like most this summer, they want to be glued to the television for hours each day watching the excitement of the Olympic unfold before their very eyes. As fun as it is to watch the Olympic games, it’s also a great way to help your children try some new athletic endeavors.  This way you can watch your games and play them, too! With a few tools and a little imagination, you can make the experience fun and active for your children. Here are a few ideas to get your started.OWG_Blog_Art_7-9-12

  1. Use the water hose to create a mini track for your youngest kids so they can race the 100 “meter,” 200 “meter,” and so on.
  2. Use a sand box as a long jump. Smooth it out after each jump so they can see the imprint left from their jump (just like the athletes!).
  3. Try fencing with pool noodles.
  4. Use old boxes to create hurdles.
  5. Have a cartwheel contest as a gymnastics routine and, for the younger kids, let them tumble.
  6. Get an old piece of lumber and set up a “balance-beam” right on the ground.
  7. Visit the neighborhood pool and have swim races. You can even do floatie relays.

These are just a few to get you started. We’d love to hear about your creative ideas or even better, share your pictures on our Facebook page!
