Last week we had a chance to learn from one urban farmer about how raising your own chickens is cheaper and easier than you might think. Of course, as cute as those baby chicks are, most people don’t raise them as pets. After about 4 months of raising them, delicious and fresh eggs start to show up! So what are some of the benefits of farm-/backyard-fresh eggs?
- Most obviously, you are getting the freshest eggs possible. Healthy chickens will produce one egg a day. All you need to do is head out to the chicken coop in the morning for your breakfast!
- You control the type of feed chickens will be eating.
- Fresh eggs will keep much longer than the ones you get at the store. Eggs come out with a mucus layer on them that is scrubbed off as eggs are packaged and shipped. As long as you don’t scrub off that layer, eggs can be kept for up to 6 weeks.
- Got extras? They are a great gift or a way to make a little cash on the side!
